About this site
My name is Claire Vasseur. I am a lecturer-guide, I have lived on rue des Martyrs since 2009, and I have been leading walks in Nouvelle Athènes for fifteen years. The Musée Gustave Moreau is a few streets away from my home, and I take visitors there at least once a month. This site is my independent guide to the museum and what you can see in the surrounding area in the same day.
Why this site
Because the questions I’m always asked about the museum are the same, and they rarely find a clear answer online: is it free, how much time is needed, how do you get there, who was Moreau, what is there to see. I wanted one page per question, with the answer in the first sentence, followed by the details I would give in person. The complete guide brings all this together; the pages on opening hours, visit duration, and works to see each answer one question.
I also mention what may disappoint. Labels are scarce, there is no café, and the floors are reached by stairs. In return, there are no crowds, no time slots to book, and a house left exactly as the painter wanted it in 1895.
What this site is not
This site is not the museum. The official website of the Musée national Gustave Moreau is musee-moreau.fr; that is where, or at the museum’s door, you buy your ticket. I am neither the Réunion des musées nationaux nor a tour operator, and I do not sell any tickets myself. Cases of free admission and what the ticket covers are explained under tickets.
How the site is funded
The museum’s ticket is modest and almost never sells out; what gets booked is the day around it: the Paris Museum Pass, a guided tour of Orsay, the Palais Garnier, Montmartre. These visits are listed under all visits and rated in our reviews.
